How to master the camera of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max | Apple Insider (2023)

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have the same cameras

There's an incredibly powerful camera and app in the newiPhone'a 14 Proand iPhone 14 Pro Max. Here's how to get the best photos possible.

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have three cameras on the back to work with. The main camera is a 48MP wide-angle lens and is sealed with a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP telephoto lens.

This year, Apple beefed up the camera with a revamped photonic engine, action mode, and more. Let's take a look at the growing feature set of Apple's latest pro iPhones.

volume buttons

If we start with the controls of the Camera app, sometimes touching the screen is not ideal. A simple touch can cause the phone to shake, inadvertently blurring the photo.

Apple has a solution for this where the volume buttons can duplicate the easily accessible shutter buttons.

Pressing the volume up or down button takes a photo by default. Holding down one of the buttons will start video recording. When you release the button, the video capture will stop.

If you go into Settings, you can change this behavior. I pretendsettings>Camera, you can enable burst capture.

When it is on, if you hold down the volume up button, it will start taking continuous photos. If you release the button, it will stop taking these photos.

control zoom

On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, there are four optical-quality zoom levels to choose from. There's 0.5X that uses the ultra-wide lens, 1X that builds on the main wide-angle lens, 2X that also uses the main lens, and 3X that uses the telephoto lens.

The idea is that Apple can use the 12-megapixel center of the larger 48-megapixel sensor to achieve 2x zoom without anyTRUEquality loss. If we go ultra-technical, there's some loss of quality because Apple can't take advantage of pixel binning at the time, which means smaller pixels now capture slightly less light.

That being said, it will produce better photos than with digital zoom. Digital zoom works by cropping the photo instead of adjusting the optics, creating a lower resolution photo.

predefined xoom levels

You can choose between these preset zoom levels by touching the circular indicators above the shutter button. Another little-known trick is that when you touch any of them, you can hold and slide your finger up or down.

This gesture will open a wheel where you can select the level of magnification you're looking for, up to 15x digital zoom. Preset magnification levels have an equivalent focal length below the magnification level.

Once you've done that, you can roll the wheel towards the shutter to get rid of it, or wait a few moments for it to go away on its own. Another option is to pinch or eject, although this is not as comfortable and locks the screen.

Toggle macro in settings

If you want to shoot in macro mode, you can move your phone closer to your subject, which will activate macro mode. You can focus just millimeters from the lens. If you don't want this to happen automatically, you can turn the switch on in Settings.

A quick approach to Apple

QuickTake makes it easy to take photos, videos, or burst photos instantly. Tapping the white shutter button will take a photo, but holding it down will record a video. No need to switch to video mode.

Video will be recorded for as long as you hold down the shutter button and will stop when you release it. If you plan on recording for a while, move the shutter button to the right, which will lock you into video mode and you won't have to hold the button down.

Take burst photos with QuickTake

If you want to capture a series of photos, you can touch the button and immediately drag it to the left. It will now record burst photos as long as you hold it. A counter will appear on the original trigger ring showing the number of shots taken.

bonus control

At the top of the phone, on either side of the Dynamic Island, are additional controls that will change depending on the shooting situation. You might see a ProRes or RAW indicator, flash icon, night mode icon, or Live Photo toggle.

advanced controls

(Video) iPhone 14 Plus VS iPhone 14 Pro Max! Is the Pro Worth the $200 Difference!?

On top of that, there's a carrot arrow in the center that you can tap to bring up other controls above the shutter. These icons include flash control (auto, off, on), night mode (appears only in the dark), live photo (on, off), photo styles (five styles to choose from), aspect ratio (4:3 , 1:1). , 16:9), exposure compensation, timer and filters.

Night mode is still present on the iPhone 14 Pro and simulates the effects of a slow shutter speed. On a traditional camera, leaving the camera shutter open longer will allow more light to reach the sensor, allowing you to take pictures in dark environments. The trick is that you simply cannot move the camera while taking a photo.

Night mode will automatically activate when a low light scene is detected. It will adjust the shutter speed depending on how much the phone and the subject are moving. By show of hands, the iPhone can limit you to a two or three second snapshot. With the support of a tripod, the shutter can stay open for up to 30 seconds.

By touching the night mode icon, you can manually adjust the shutter length by sliding it left and right. Once again, though, it won't give you options for 10, 15, or 30 seconds if the phone shakes a lot.

You can apply filters after you take a photo, but Photo Styles are new to the iPhone 13 lineup. They're added the moment you take the photo, and can be customized to suit your photographic preferences. If you've made changes and don't like them, you can restore them by tapping the undo arrow on the right edge.

RAW settings

In some situations, you may want to take a photo in RAW format. These uncompressed photos take up much more space, but allow for more detail in the image, especially in highlights and shadows.

With the iPhone 14 Pro, you can shoot 12MP RAW or use the entire 48MP sensor. By using the full sensor, you can see more grain in the image. So only trust RAW mode if you know what you're getting into.

Video recording on iPhone 14 Pro

Apple has given users four video modes on the iPhone 14 Pro, give or take. There are time-lapse, slow-motion, cinematic, and preset video modes.

When you switch to video mode, the resolution and frame rate will be displayed in the upper left corner. Touch one of the numbers to change it. Depending on the video mode, there will be different recording resolutions and frame rates depending on what your phone can capture.

This year, Apple updated the Cinematic mode on the iPhone 14 Pro to record video in resolutions up to 4K. Previously it was limited to 1080P HD. When recording in 4K, you can record at 24 or 30 frames per second.

(Video) iPhone 14 VS iPhone 14 Pro In-Depth Camera Compare! All the Differences!

Cinema mode video editing

If you haven't heard of theater mode before, it mimics portrait mode but for video. This will keep the subject sharp and the rest of the scene blurry. After shooting, you can adjust the focus based on what you want to emphasize.

During the editing process, you have control over the subject and the simulated aperture. By adjusting the aperture, you can change the degree of background blur, just like in portrait mode.

New for iPhone 14 Pro users is Action Mode. Action mode lets you capture smooth video while moving fast. Think of it like highly stabilized video that you would normally capture with a gimbal using just an iPhone.

To activate this mode, simply switch your phone to video mode and a new icon will appear at the top. It looks like a running man, and once activated, you can move around and still record smooth video.

action mode activated

Action mode can record at 2.8K and has one small clip per video. Cropping is necessary for post-shot stabilization applied by your phone.

You need a lot of light for action mode, but there is a setting that allows you to handle low light. When this option is enabled, the stabilization effect will not be as effective.

start shooting

Third-party camera apps are always an option for iPhone users, but many still stick with Apple's stock options. That's why it's so important that Apple continues to add features to the default Camera app.

Whether you're shooting in Portrait mode, taking live photos, or recording a stylized video in Cinema mode, the Camera app has you covered.
